Penetrating Damp Repair Following Chimney Stack Defect – Amblecote, Dudley

Location: Amblecote, Dudley

Project Overview

This project in Amblecote, Dudley involved remedial works following long-term penetrating damp caused by defects to a chimney stack.

The issue had been ongoing for some time, resulting in moisture ingress that affected both the wall and ceiling areas internally. While the external defects had been addressed prior to our involvement, our role was to deal with the residual internal damage and contamination.

The Issue

Water ingress from the chimney stack had led to prolonged exposure of the internal structure to moisture.

This caused deterioration of plasterboard and wall finishes, as well as contamination from salts within the masonry. The ceiling line was also affected, and there was an increased risk to embedded timber elements due to the elevated moisture levels.

Even after the external issue was resolved, the internal materials remained compromised and required full remediation to prevent further problems.

Our Approach

All affected areas were carefully cut back, with plaster and ceiling sections removed as required to expose the underlying structure.

As a precautionary measure, all exposed timbers were treated with a preservation treatment to protect against potential rot or fungal decay resulting from previous moisture exposure.

A two-part bonded membrane system was then installed to isolate the new internal finishes from any remaining moisture and salt contamination within the masonry.

Particular attention was given to detailing at the ceiling junction, ensuring continuity of protection before reboarding the ceiling areas.

Reinstatement & Finishing

Following installation of the membrane system, the ceiling was reboarded and all affected wall areas were re-plastered.

The surfaces were then plaster skimmed to a smooth, high-quality finish, carefully blended into the surrounding existing areas to maintain a consistent appearance.

All works were completed with a focus on both durability and finish quality.

The Result

The property in Amblecote, Dudley has now been fully restored internally following the chimney-related water ingress.

By removing all contaminated materials, protecting structural elements, and installing a robust membrane system, we ensured that the internal finishes are now fully protected from any residual moisture or salts.

The result is a clean, dry and professionally finished space, with the confidence that the issue has been properly resolved at both source and internally.
