Project Overview
This project involved a comprehensive basement waterproofing solution at a Victorian terrace property in Stourbridge, West Midlands, where the existing basement area was experiencing ongoing flooding.
The client contacted us due to persistent water ingress, which had led to damp conditions, unpleasant odours, and an unusable space. The primary objective was to prevent further flooding and create a dry, functional basement suitable for storage use.
The Issue
The basement was subject to regular water ingress, resulting in standing water and consistently damp conditions. This not only made the space unusable but also contributed to poor air quality and ongoing moisture-related issues within the property.
Due to the below-ground nature of the structure, a robust waterproofing system was required — one capable of managing water ingress rather than simply attempting to block it.
Our Approach
Following a full assessment, we designed and installed a Type C cavity drainage system, allowing water entering the structure to be safely managed and removed.
Ground excavation was carried out as required to allow for the installation of a pumping station within the basement. A perimeter drainage channel (aqua channel system) was then installed, designed to collect water from around the internal perimeter of the space.
A cavity drainage membrane (CDM) was installed to the base of the wall areas creating an upstand detail directing any penetrating moisture down into the drainage system. This ensures that any water entering the structure is controlled and channelled efficiently.
The collected water is directed into the pumping chamber, where it is safely discharged externally away from the property.
To ensure reliability and long-term performance, the system includes:
- A primary pump and backup pump, providing redundancy in the event of failure
- A battery backup alarm system, alerting the homeowner to high water levels or system issues
Floor Construction & Finishing
Once the drainage system was installed, the floor was levelled as required to create a suitable base.
A closed-cell insulation layer was incorporated, followed by the installation of a raised floor membrane system, ensuring full separation from any residual moisture below.
A tongue and groove flooring system was then installed, creating a solid, durable surface suitable for regular use.
The Result
The basement at this Stourbridge, West Midlands property has been successfully transformed from a regularly flooding space into a dry, controlled environment.
While the client did not require a habitable conversion, the area is now fully suitable for storage, with the risk of flooding effectively eliminated through a professionally designed and installed waterproofing system.
The result is a reliable, low-maintenance solution that provides long-term protection and peace of mind.
