Remedial Rising Damp Treatment Following Failed Previous Works – Uffington, Shrewsbury

Location: Uffington, Shrewsbury

Project Overview

This project involved remedial rising damp treatment to multiple areas within a cottage property in Uffington, Shrewsbury.

The client had previously undergone damp proofing works several years earlier, however the issues had returned and continued to worsen over time. Following investigation, it became clear that the original installation had not been carried out to an acceptable standard.

Our role was to remove the failed materials, correctly treat the affected walls and fully reinstate the internal finishes.

The Issue

Several wall areas throughout the cottage were showing ongoing signs of rising damp, despite previous attempts at treatment.

Once the wall plaster was removed, it became evident that the original works had been poorly executed, with unsuitable materials having been used in an attempt to block moisture within the walls rather than properly treating the issue.

As a result, moisture and contamination remained trapped within the structure, leading to continued deterioration of the internal finishes.

Our Approach

All affected plaster was removed from the treated areas, with the majority of works carried out to approximately one metre in height in line with standard rising damp treatment procedures.

A thixotropic damp proof course (DPC) was installed via injection to create a new chemical barrier against rising moisture.

Following this, a two-part bonded membrane system was applied to isolate residual moisture and contamination within the masonry and provide a reliable base for reinstatement.

This ensured the walls were treated correctly and protected long-term, rather than simply covering over the issue.

Reinstatement & Finishing

The wall areas were rebuilt using a combination of wet plaster and base plaster as required to achieve the correct wall levels.

All surfaces were then plaster skimmed to a smooth, high-quality finish, carefully blended into the surrounding existing areas.

The property was left ready for the client to redecorate once the treated areas had fully dried, including the reinstatement of skirting boards and final decorative finishes.
